M.Y. Azzam another Gem from Lurssen

At the end of last year I wrote an article about M.Y. Eclipse being the biggest yacht in the world. Measuring 590 feet long, the German-built craft, named Azzam, has officially bumped Roman Abramovich’s  536-foot Eclipse from its No. 1 ranking. M.Y. Azzam is now out and it is a beauty. She has beautiful lines and with a length of 180 meters plus a top speed of 30 knots it has to be!

M.Y. Azzam is now the biggest yacht in the world!

The Client representative assembled a world-class team, composed by Lürssen engineers, technical project managers from Burgess, the interior designer Christophe Leoni and Nauta Yachts. Azzam breaks new ground in terms of dimensions, performance and technology.

Nauta CEO Mario Pedol added, “When I saw the scale model before the generalpresentation to the Principal, I was 100% happy with the outcome. So was the Principal. Such recognition made me confident that we had achieved our goal.

According to Burgess CEO Jonathan Beckett the construction of this yacht – with its highly complex technical features – has been extremely demanding and challenging. “It has been a real team effort – he says – between all the professionals involved, including ourselves, the builder and the designers, and we are proud to be associated with this extraordinary and unique project as Owner’s technical consultants.

The renowned French designer Christophe Leoni has been able to realize a sophisticated and luxurious interior in Empire style.“Though yachting is not my main area of business – he comments – I thoroughly enjoyed the cooperation with Nauta and Lürssen and I am confident that the final yacht is everything and more that the Owner expects.”

The maker of the Azzam, Lürssen Yachts, told reporters that the boat was “without a doubt the most challenging yacht that has ever been built.”

Powered by jets rather than propellers, the yacht boasts 94,000 horsepower (combination of gasturbines and diesels) under the hood and can travel at a top speed of 30 knots, about 30 percent faster than most megayachts.

Azzam truly represents a milestone in not only Lurssen’s history but yachting history as well.

Worlds Largest Cruise ship to Change Itinerary

Oasis of the seas largest cruise ship in the world

Southampton – Cruises on board the world’s largest ship will go on sale in April after Royal Caribbean announced Oasis of the Seas will call at the United Kingdom’s leading cruise port, Southampton in 2014.

Travelmole reports that the 6 400 passenger ship will offer cruises in Europe next autumn and will make its first port of call into Southampton on October 15.

The ship, which is longer than four football pitches, will be 40% large than any other cruise ship to ever dock in the UK.

Oasis of the Seas will leave Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, its home port since December 2009 next September on a 12-night eastbound transatlantic cruise to Barcelona from where it will offer a series of Mediterranean cruises.

The ship will return to Port Everglades on a 13-night westbound transatlantic cruise on October 14, calling into Southampton, where UK guests can join the ship to sail across the Atlantic.

Royal Caribbean associate vice president and general manager UK and Ireland Jo Rzymowska said: “Oasis of the Seas sailing from Southampton is going to be the hottest ticket in town.

“Bringing the world’s largest cruise ship to Europe, and specifically the UK and Southampton, is testament to the commitment to selling cruise demonstrated by our trade partners.

Triumph update

triumph engine room

As expected from the below article dealing with an engine room fire is a big deal. In this case a fuel line. It now seems that the crew responding to that fire did a fantastic job. Well done guys…… However the investigation isn’t finished yet.

“A U.S. Coast Guard official says the cause of the engine-room fire on the Carnival cruise ship Triumph was a leak in a fuel oil return line.

In a teleconference Monday, Cmdr. Teresa Hatfield estimated that the investigation of the disabled ship would take six months.

She said the Bahamas is leading the investigation, with the coast guard and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) leading U.S. interests in the probe.

She said investigators have been with the ship since it arrived Thursday in Mobile, Ala. Since then, she said, interviews have been conducted with passengers and crew and forensic analysis has been performed on the ship.

She said the crew responded appropriately to the fire. “They did a very good job,” she said.

In an email after Monday’s conference call, coast guard spokesman Carlos Diaz described the oil return line that leaked as stretching from the ship’s No. 6 engine to the fuel tank.

The Triumph left Galveston, Texas, on Feb. 7 for a four-day trip to Mexico. The fire paralyzed the ship early Feb. 10, leaving it adrift in the Gulf of Mexico until tugboats towed it to Mobile. Passengers described harsh conditions on board: overflowing toilets, long lines for food, foul odours and tent cities set up for sleeping on deck.

Hatfield said investigators from the coast guard and NTSB would stay with the ship until about the end of the week, then continue work at their respective offices. She said the investigation will look further at the cause of the fire and the crew’s response, as well as why the ship was disabled so long.”

Steve Jobs Super yacht “Venus” Seized in the Netherlands

steve jobs yacht Venus

This article was taken from NDTV:

The Hague: A super yacht built for then Apple founder Steve Jobs has been seized in Amsterdam following a bill row with product designer Philippe Starck.

Last Wednesday the bailiffs of an Amsterdam court boarded the ship, called Venus, and chained it to the dock with the vessel forbidden to be moved, Xinhua on Friday quoted the Het Financieele Dagblad daily as saying.

The row is about an unpaid invoice of three million euros (about $4 million) sent by Starck, who worked with Jobs for years in designing the ship.

As a compensation he would get six per cent of the costs of the yacht. Since Venus was estimated at 150 million euros, Starck expected to receive nine million euros. However according to the heirs, Jobs’ ship in reality only cost 105 million euros and as a result Starck was paid six million euros.

The French designer did not get a response to the invoice for the remaining three million euros, Het Financieele Dagblad reported.

The 80-metre aluminium motor ship was just about to leave the port of Amsterdam. After a construction period of two years, Venus was launched in Aalsmeer two months ago and delivered to Jobs’ widow Laurene.

Steve Jobs died in October last year at the age of 56 years. He had planned to sail the world on the Venus with his wife and children. The yacht includes a sun terrace with Jacuzzi and is controlled via seven 27-inch iMacs.

The duration of the seizure was not immediately known. Jobs and Starck became good friends during their cooperation and never contractually agreed the payment.

Biggest Cruise Ship in the World

Alure of the seas

Good old Port Everglades. I wonder how many of those buildings will fit into this ship with a length of 363m and a Gross tonnage of 225000 tonnes. I will include a little fact sheet about this monster. If you haven’t seen the previous post which was about the “Eclipse”. I don’t think there is much of a comparison besides the price tag which seems to be in the same range. Is bigger always better?

Technical details

The gross tonnage of the Oasis of the Seas is 225,282. Her displacement—the actual mass of the vessel—is estimated at approximately 100,000 metric tons, slightly less than that of an American Nimitz-class air craft carrier.

To keep the ship stable without increasing the draft excessively, the designers created a wide hull. 9.3 metres (31 ft) of the ship sits beneath the water, a small percentage of the ship’s overall height. Wide, shallow ships such as this tend to be “snappy”, meaning that they can snap back upright after a wave has passed, which can be uncomfortable. This effect, however, is mitigated by the vessel’s large size. The cruise ship’s officers were pleased with the ship’s stability and performance during the transatlantic crossing, when the vessel, in order to allow finishing work to go on, slowed and changed course in the face of winds “almost up to hurricane force” and seas in excess of 12 metres (39 ft).

While the design length of the Allure of the Seas is the same as that of her sister, she is actually about 50 millimetres (2.0 in) longer than the Oasis of the Seas. According to the shipyard, this is not intentional and such small differences in length may occur simply due to the temperature of the steel in such a large ship.

The ship’s power comes from six medium speed marine diesel generating sets: three 16 cylinder Wartsila 16V46D common rail engines producing 18,860 kilowatts (25,290 hp) each and three similar 12 cylinder Wärtsilä 12V46 engines producing 13,860 kilowatts (18,590 hp) each. The fuel consumption of the main engines at full power is 1,377 US gallons (5,210 l; 1,147 imp gal) of fuel oil per engine per hour for the 16-cylinder engines and 1,033 US gallons (3,910 l; 860 imp gal) per engine per hour for the 12-cylinder engines. The total output of these prime movers, some 97,020 kilowatts (130,110 hp), is converted to electricity, used in hotel power for operation of the lights, elevators, electronics, galleys, water treatment plant, and all of the other systems used on the operation of the vessel, as well as propulsion. Propulsion is provided by three 20,000-kilowatt (26,800 hp) Azipods, ABB’s brand of electric azimuth thrusters. These pods, suspended under the stern, contain electric motors driving 20-foot (6 m) propellers. Because they are rotatable, no rudders are needed to steer the ship. Docking is assisted by four 5,500-kilowatt (7,380 hp) transverse bow thrusters.

The ship carries 18 lifeboats that hold 370 people each, for a total of 6,660 people. Inflatable life rafts provide for additional passengers and crew.

There are seven different neighborhoods onboard Allure of the Seas:
Adventure Ocean, The Boardwalk, Central Park, Entertainment Place, Pool & Parks, Royal Promenade and Vitality.

Central Park has the feeling of truly being in a park, with 12,175 plants, 62 vine plants, and 56 trees. They also pipe in sounds of birds during the daytime hours and crickets after dark.

There are 24 dining options onboard Allure of the Seas, with 37 different bars and lounges to choose from. There are 3 main dining rooms, one with the traditional dining option and the rest is anytime.

As a standard it also comes with 3 speedboats and a submarine that can dive up to 160 feet. Security is foremost on Eclipse. The ship is equipped with a system that can detect unauthorized personnel and a defense system capable of launching missles. Abramovich’s yacht also features armor plating and bullet-proof glass in critical parts of the vessel. The ship is also shielded with an privacy feature in the form of lasers that monitor the area, and can shoot a beam of light directly at any cameras aiming to shoot photos of Abromovich or his guests.

You will need a bit of german language to understand this video:

Well the short answer to the above question is that in 2013 this big yacht will no longer be the biggest yacht in the world. As you can see in the video these projects are executed in secrecy so to get the details we will have to wait till closer to the time of launch. It will be called Azzam with an approx length of 180m……….. Cant wait to see it or sail it………

Leave me a reply…..and feel free to share it!
